I am not really that coffee obsessed like I know some of you are but I do love a good cup of it every now and again. Wellington sure has some good cups of it! As Welly is known as the coffee capital of New Zealand, most of the places you go, you are guaranteed a pretty good cup of joe. But to narrow it down to a few neat little places, I thought I’d share my (current) top 5.

All are local and independent: you wont find them anywhere else but Welly. They are also spread throughout the city so a little tour of them is a good way to see a good chunk of Wellington.

This will be the first of my Top 5 Wellington series, so sign up via the link in my sidebar to be notified when the next are out; brunch, dinner, pizza, boutiques etc. all to come 🙂

Here goes:

5 AMAZING Coffee Shops in Wellington (in no particular order)

Goods Tinakori Road Coffee

Goods Tinakori Road Coffee

1. Goods

342A Tinakori Road, Thorndon

I love this cafe/bakery. The cafe originally opened in mid 2017 and recently changed hands becoming Goods, rather than Doppio. It is by far one of my favourite places to get coffee in Wellington. I love it especially because it feels like a hidden gem, that not many people know about (although I’m sure many do). The interior is beautiful, clean lines with high quality furniture and well chosen antiques. Its a dreamy place to sit and read a book.

Aside from the decor, their coffee is always amazing and I often pick one up on my way to work. And the best part: their pastries and pies! The quiches, croissants and the loaves of sourdough are not to miss. This is the place for Sunday rainy-day chilling.

Customs Supreme Coffee

2. Customs

39 Ghuznee Street, Te Aro

Customs Coffee is my number one choice for Cuba Street coffee. They also have a beautiful nostalgic interior with 70s wood vibes AND amazing coffee. Customs is run by coffee giants Coffee Supreme and attention to detail is paramount. They are experimental with unblended coffee that tells you something about its origin and focus on speciality coffee including high quality filtered.

If you love coffee then customs is probably going to want to be your first stop in Wellington. They also have a great little menu including doughnuts and experimental toasts. My advice, take your book and do some people watching. If you can only go to one place in Wellington for coffee, this would be it.

3. Staple Espresso

175 Victoria Street, Te Aro

New kid on the block. Staple is a simplified place to get some simply great coffee in central Wellington. They use Eight Thirty Coffee, different from most Wellington cafes, they give you something new to try. Run by local guy Nik, Staple is just about the really great coffee, laid back and stripped back with a good selection of snacks and pastries so you don’t go hungry.

The space is light and bright, a great place to meet people, have a work meeting or just grab a take away. Fairly new on the scene this is a Wellington spot that coffee lovers from Wellington and beyond really should try.

Peoples Coffee Wellington

4. Peoples Coffee Espresso

22 B Newtown Av

Peoples Coffee Espresso in Newtown is the flagship Wellington outlet for Peoples Coffee, the renowned Wellington based coffee roastary. Their coffee is known for being some of the best you can get here in New Zealand and I am a particular fan because they are fully fair trade and organic. (See my post on Fair Trade in Wellington Here)

The cafe is small and intimate and coffee is the focus. Here you will find some of the best and most specialist coffee in southern Wellington. I am super into their cold brew – a good choice for summers days!

aro cafe

Aro Cafe

5. Aro Cafe

90 Aro Street

Last but not least, Aro Cafe was actually the first place I had coffee when I moved to Wellington and it set high standards. Apart from the memories, I love it because their coffee is hand blended on site using small machines and is super smooth. Aro Cafe also serve a great breakfast, lunch and dinner menu which they pride on being local and seasonal.

Aro Cafe is definitely the best option if you are in the Aro Valley area, perhaps for a pre Garage Project warm up?

So those are my current favourite coffee spots to hit up, but I am always discovering new and cute ones and love any tips people might have for cool places. Where is your fave? let me know in the comments down below!
