A friend recently told me I should write this post as she was looking for a good BYO (Bring your own alcohol) place to eat for her birthday. I thought it was a great way to kick off my Top 5 Wellington series again.

Who doesn’t love a great BYO restaurant, it’s such a good way to enjoy a meal out without breaking the bank and you can also take your favourite bottle of wine.

There are many BYO places (mostly Asian cuisine) in Wellington to choose from, and most of them are great but here are my Top 5 – tried and tested, best BYO in Wellington:

Best BYO in Wellington:

Rams

171 Cuba Street

This is a favourite with friends here in Wellington, Rams on Cuba Street is a Chinese restaurant with a lively vibe, a great menu and a super easy going place to have a BYO meal. The menu is vast and there is something for everyone, but the great orders for me would be the Hot Spicy Eggplant, all the Dumplings and the Salt Pepper Squid. SO GOOD! Book ahead as this place is not too big and it is popular.

KAZU Restaurant

13 Tory Street

KAZU on Tory Street is the sister restaurant of the equally great Kazu Yakitori and Sake bar which is on Courtnay Place. This is, in my eyes, some of the best Japenese you can find in Welly. They do the most delicious ramen and great sashimi and I always enjoy their octopus balls (sound fishy but they are so good). Some of the seating is traditional Japanese style, so book to ensure you get this. KAZU has the option of BYO so it is a top player in the best BYOs in Wellington for me.

thai wellington

Phuthai Esarn

35 Cambridge Terrace

Looking for great Thai food and BYO, you can’t go wrong with Phuthai Esarn (or sister Phuthai Lanna on Tory). They have authentic Thai dishes and the atmosphere is very laid back and intimate. Their traditional Larb dishes are definitely worth trying and you couldn’t go wrong with their Panaeng curry. So good!

asian kitchen wellington

Asian Kitchen

33 Arthur Street

Asian Kitchen is a great option if you are looking for something quick, cheap and cheerful in a handy location with BYO option. The cuisine is a Chinese, Malaysian and Thai blend with all the best options from each. I am a big fan of their soups including the Wonton soup and the Burmese Curry is so good. Vegetarians won’t be disappointed. The place is pretty small but they always find space for you.

Istana Malaysia

1 Allen Street

Looking for somewhere with a big group and a rowdy vibe? I would definitely recommend Istana Malaysia for this. They cater to most dietary requirements and call themselves the best and most authentic Malaysian in Wellington. Think delicious Sambal, Rendang, Nasi Lemak and Satay, all done super well and with set menus for big groups to make life easier. I rate this place for a cheap and cheerful spot with a big crew.

So those are my Top 5 Best BYO in Wellington. Enjoy!
