The sun is out and it’s time to hit one of the best beaches in Wellington for swimming and some sunbathing. Not every beach in Wellington is created equally, so here is my advice for the best beaches to hit in Wellington when you are looking for a swim and/or chill.

The 7 Best Beaches in Wellington for Swimming:

Scorching Bay

Scorching Bay is an absolutely stellar Wellington beach for sunbathing. There is a big grassy bank next to a strip of sand and a nice calm bay for swimming. Just a short drive or bus from the city over on the Miramar peninsular, this is a popular spot, and for good reason. Next to the very popular Scorch-o-Rama cafe, this is an ideal spot to grab an ice cream before hanging on the beach.

Princess Bay

Princess Bay Beach has to be one of the most spectacular beaches for sunbathing in Wellington. It sits down under the south coastal road with a stunning view across to the South Island. Being nestled under the rocks, this beach is relatively sheltered for a Wellington beach and is very popular because of this. The stunning crystal-clear blue water makes it well worth the fight for a parking spot. One of the top wellington swimming beaches for sure.

Lyall Bay

Everyone knows Lyall Bay. I’d like to say Wellington’s biggest beach although I haven’t looked that up so don’t quote me! Lyall bay is a huge sweeping beach great for walking and surfing, but also for swimming and chilling and watching the planes land at the airport as you do. Loads of great food and drink options nearby too such as Parrot Dog Brewery which is an absolute fave!

Worser Bay

Worser Bay is a great sandy beach a little way along the aforementioned Scorching Bay. Arguably a little bit less popular so quieter. Equally as beautiful though. This little gem gets lots of protection from the road through the big sand dunes. A stunning spot to park for a day on the beach in Wellington. Has plenty of parking as well as changing rooms, showers, and toilets.

Days Bay

A bit of a travel from Wellington CBD, opposite the harbor on the Eastbourne side of the city is the wonderful Days Bay Beach. This bay gets the sun right into the evening so is beautiful for an after-work swim. Flanked by steep bushland behind this is a unique place to have a swim in a calm bay. Plenty of great cafes nearby and of course my fave yoga studio, Pause.

Oriental Bay

This list wouldn’t be complete without the iconic, Oriental Bay. In a handy central location, this is great for an after work dip. It’s also just the place to be on a sunny wellington day for chilling and people-watching. There are some fun features on this beach such as diving platforms and a huge water fountain which is controlled by a wind sensor. Lots of parking but get in quick on those busy days!

Address: Inner harbor, Oriental Parade, CBD Wellington.
